To days of inspiration...
Since the Today Show last Thursday with the full cast, I've been obsessed. I've been looking at pictures, videos, listening to the soundtrack non stop...

RENT!

It's the musical that opened my mind and shaped my heart, and it's being made into a movie.

It opens in New York, LA, and Toronto on November 11th, yet it doesn't open in the rest of North America until November 23rd.

My question, is why? Why would they only open a movie like that in selected cities? I get the theory -- on movies that normally wouldn't have a strong opening, they stagger it. They get people talking about it, and get a following. Then, when they open nation wide, people are more likely to go because of the reviews already out there.

But does RENT have that small of a following that they can't open up a few theatres in every city? There's some pretty big names in it, do they honestly think that people won't come out to see it?

When a traveling theatre company came through here last October, the theatre was half full. It may have been because it was poorly advertised, or that we went Halloween night... or is it that some people are still not ready for it?

Eight main characters, and four of them are gay. There will be girl on girl kissing, and guy on guy kissing on screen. Maureen and Joanne kiss in the promo, and even though I haven't seen the promo on TV yet, I'm pretty sure that they won't be showing it during TGIF (do they still have TGIF on ABC?) or family oriented programming.

When my two best friends and I went in October, the people sitting next to me left at intermission.

I don't want to live in a 'tolerant' society.

I want EVERYONE to be able to have an open mind and enjoy this masterpiece. I want every young person to see it and challenge the views that their parents and grandparents have expressed over the years.

And mostly, I don't want to wait a week and a half to see a movie that Toronto gets to see on the opening day. ::stomps feet::

I don't understand how you can live in NY and not be going to broadway plays every week. I wouldn't have ANY money if I lived there. As it is, I go see EVERY musical that comes through here with a traveling company!

I love RENT too. The first time I saw it I was in grade 12, and sitting in the second last row of the second balcony, and I didn't know anything about it. The next day I bought the soundtrack and listened to it until I knew ALL the lyrics. Then I listened to it some more. ;) The second time I saw it (It didn't come back again until 4 years after it first came through!), it was last Halloween, and I splurged for 4th row centre tickets.

Did you notice that the movie starts 6 of the original 8 main characters?

I have a serious crush on Idina Menzel as well, so I'm REAL stoked.

Dammit, why can't I live in NY?

Easy -- by and large, I hate musicals. ::bg:: I hate all the love at first sight crap (including Mimi and Roger in RENT -- I love the other storylines), and my tolerance for musicals is very, very low. I'm worried about the RENT movie mostly because the mix of a realistic medium (i.e. film) and completely unrealistic and unbelievable people-breaking-into-song thing makes me crazy. I can handle stage musicals, sometimes, but not so much on film. ::g::

(I loved the Buffy musical because they played the whole episode off of how friggin' bizarre it is for people to break into song -- meta-tastic! Heh.)

Because movies haven't been doing well in theatres this year. Sure, Star Wars and Charlie were hits, but the box office numbers have been slumping all year. So it makes sense to - slightly - stagger this release. Set it for BIG openings in the three big cities, and get people to come there especially to see it. Then let word trickle out that everybody should see it, that it's a hit, and then on its wide-release weekend, more people than before will go see it. They're not taking any chances with throwing it out there, getting two hot weeks, and having the box office slump come back. This way they're guaranteed to get more press by having a limited - yet popular, in these big cities - release first.

It also could have something to do with what other movies are opening when. IE, isn't Harry Potter opening the week of the 11th?? The press surrounding that will be insane. Don't want anything else to get burried then.

I haven't seen the play yet, but I'm REALLY looking forward to the movie!

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure that HP opens Novembe 18th, but I could be wrong.

I mean, I get it. It makes sense, but there are RENT fans everywhere, and I don't want to wait. ::stomps feet::
